One in six Italian newspaper kiosks
have closed in the last four years, a survey by chambers of
commerce groups Unioncamere-Infocamere said Wednesday.
Amid a crisis in the newspaper publishing industry and ever
fewer paper copies being sold, some 2,700 kiosks shut down
between 2019 and 2023, the survey said.
There were some 13,500 newspaper sellers in September last year
compared to over 16,000 in September 2019.
Only Bolzano and Sondrio in northern Italy bucked the trend with
one new kiosk apiece.
Many of the remaining newspaper outlets are run by women,
Unioncamere-Infocamere said.
