The Italian interior ministry said Saturday it will appeal against a Catania court's ruling not upholding the detention of three migrants after judging the government's recent migrant decree illegitimate.
Sources close to the migrant dossier said "the accelerated border procedure is one of the aspects that, already contained in the 2023 European directive, today finds the unanimous agreement of European countries within the framework of the new Pact for Migration and Asylum which is being built, and which the Italian government disciplined in its Cutro decree", referring to an emergency decree issued in the Calabrian town where 94 migrants and refugees including 35 children died in a shipwreck on February 26.
The ruling Brothers of Italy (FdI) party earlier called the ruling, which it said had freed four Tunisians, political and ideological.
Magistrates union ANM said it was simply democracy at work, and not interference in the political sphere.
