An alert over toxic pollution cased by
a recent waste-dump fire in Palermo continued on Saturday when
Sicilian environmental agency ARPA said in a new report that
dioxin levels were 35 times the permitted level in the air in
some areas of the city.
The report was based on analysis in new air samples.
The blaze at the Bellolampo landfill on July 24 has affected the
air quality of several areas of Palermo, especially the Borgo
Nuovo district.
On July 30 Palermo Mayor Roberto Lagalla signed an ordinance
saying that people in the area of the fire must wash fruit well
and eat it without the peel, not eat meat, dairy products and
eggs, and avoid animal feed and fodder for 15 days.
