Carabinieri ROS special branch
officers on Tuesday executed a pre-trial custody order against
43 people under investigation in relation to the activities of
Calabria's 'Ndrangheta mafia.
The suspects are being probed for various crimes including
mafia-type criminal association and association aimed at fraud,
extortion, unlawful competition and murder.
Judicial sources said local politicians are among those arrested
and that some face charges of electoral political-mafia
exchange.
The 'Ndrangheta is widely considered to have become Italy's most
powerful organized-crime syndicate thanks to its control over
much of the cocaine that arrives in Europe and its reach has
stretched outside its southern Italian base and gone beyond the
country's borders.
