French Transport Minister Clément
Beaune on Friday stood by his cabinet colleague, Interior
Minister Gerald Darmanin, saying he was right "on a political
level".
"The far-right in Italy, as elsewhere, makes a lot of promises
but resolves few of the problems," Beaune told Radio Europe 1.
Beaune, who represents the left-most wing of President Emmanuel
Macron's centrist majority, was referring to Darmanin's Thursday
statement that Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni is incapable of
solving Italy's migrant issue.
The comments caused anger in Italy, prompting Deputy Premier and
Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani to cancel a meeting with his
French counterpart in Paris.
