Nearly 10,000 people in the
northeastern region of Emilia Romagna were without running water
on Friday due to flooding in the local water treatment plant
caused by unprecedented rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Firefighters were working to resolve the issue at the facility
in the town of Conselice in the province of Ravenna which,
together with the province of Bologna, bore the brunt of the
extreme weather.
Meanwhile tankers and volunteers were distributing supplies.
Two people are known to have died and 500 people had to be
evacuated from their homes as a result of the torrential
rainfall and resulting flash flooding, which also damaged
infrastructure and destroyed food crops.
On Thursday the government decreed a state of emergency in the
region and allocated 10 million euros to tackle the damage.
