Part of the reason Italy and its
allies are sending military aid to Kyiv after the Russian
invasion is to stop the war expanding beyond Ukraine, Defence
Minister Guido Crosetto said on Thursday.
"The aid that is arriving is not just to save Ukraine," Crosetto
told La7 television.
"It's also a brake on an escalation that could see the war
expand. In this way, on the other hand, it remains between two
nations.
"It's necessary to have the courage to make difficult decisions
to avoid worse scenarios.
"The first ones who want to avoid an escalation are the European
countries. We all hope for the possibility of peace talks".
The government is set to approve a sixth package of aid for
Ukraine.
Crosetto said it will be the first to feature only defensive
weapons.
"We aren't giving weapons to attack the Russians, but to defend
the Ukrainians, knocking down missiles," he said.
