Premier Giorgia Meloni has said a
controversial measure in the government's 2023 budget bill that
would enable retailers to refuse to accept card payments for
amounts up to 60 euros could be changed.
The move is designed to stop retailers having to pay commissions
on small payments that make the transactions less worthwhile to
them.
But it has come under fire from consumer groups, which say it
could inconvenience families, and from opposition parties, which
says it could aid tax evasion.
There is also a risk it could breach a commitment Italy made to
the European Commission as part of the pledges to get almost 200
billion euros in low-interest loans and grants for the National
Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP).
"As far as I'm concerned, the 60-eyro threshold could be lower,"
Meloni said on Sunday.
