After significant increases in gas
supplies to Italy in recent months following Russia's invasion
of Ukraine, Rome's partnership with the North African country is
set to grow further as it seeks to end its reliance on Moscow
for energy, Premier Mario Draghi said during a visit to Algiers
on Monday.
Draghi said that Monday's Italian-Algerian intergovernmental
summit with Algerian President Abdelmadijd Tebboune and minsters
from both counties "confirms our privileged partnership
relationship in the energy sector.
"In recent months Algeria has become our country's top gas
supplier," he said.
Draghi added that the recent announcement for the supply of an
additional four billion cubic metres of gas marked an
"acceleration" with respect to what had previously been agreed
and was a foretaste of "even more significant supplies in the
coming years".
He said the partnership with Algeria would involve the
development of renewable sources of energy, especially green
hydrogen, solar, wind and geothermal power.
