Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia (FI)
and Matteo Salvini's League said Friday that they would listen
to what Premier Mario Draghi has to say in parliament on
Wednesday about the crisis of government, while stressing that
they do not fear early elections.
The premier presented his resignation to President Sergio
Mattarella on Thursday after the 5-Star Movement (M5S) failed to
back the government in a confidence vote, but the head of State
refused to accept the resignation and asked Draghi to report to
parliament and assess the situation.
"We will listen to the considerations of Premier Mario Draghi
with respect and attention," the two centre-right parties
supporting the government said in a joint statement after
Berlusconi and Salvini had a telephone conversation.
"The centre right (parties) of government will continue to
defend the interests of the Italian people with seriousness and
coherence, certainly holding no fear of the judgement of the
Italians.
"The League and Forza Italia take note of the serious political
crisis triggered in an irresponsible way by the 5-Star Movement.
"As Premier Draghi said, 'the pact of trust at the base of the
government's action no longer exists'.
"After what happened, the centre right of government wants
clarity and recognizes that it is no longer possible to count on
the 5-Star Movement in this dramatic period".
