It is necessary to promote
technological infrastructure that guarantees widespread access
to broadband, including in rural zones and sparsely populated
areas, according to the second Broadband Platform meeting.
The meeting brought together members of the European Committee
of the Regions (CoR) with European Commission experts and a
representative of last year's Portuguese Presidency of the
European Council.
The debate was an opportunity to exchange information about the
latest developments concerning key European initiatives in the
field and to discuss critical challenges around the empirical
measurement of digitalisation progress.
Statistics expert Martin Gauk of ESPON, the European cooperation
programme specialised in regional-policy analysis, presented
different approaches to collecting data to estimate cities' and
regions' degree of digitalisation.
The participants also examined the good practices included in
the Connectivity Toolbox and the review of the Broadband Cost
Reduction Directive.
