Pope Francis on Wednesday made an
appeal for an end to the blockade of grain exports from Ukraine
during his weekly general audience.
Russia has blockaded Ukrainian ports after the West imposed
sanctions on Moscow in response to its invasion of Ukraine and
the price of grain, cooking oil, fertiliser, and energy have
soared.
The United Nations has warned that a global food crisis is
looming.
"Please do not use wheat, a staple food, as a weapon of war,"
the pope said.
"The blockade of grain exports from Ukraine, on which the lives
of millions of people depend, especially in the poorest
countries, is of great concern.
"I earnestly appeal for every effort to be made to resolve this
issue and to guarantee the universal human right to food".
