Premier Mario Draghi's broad
coalition government has been hit by turmoil over the target of
raising defence spending to 2% of GDP by 2024 to come into line
with Italy's NATO commitments following Russia's invasion of
Ukraine.
Ex-premier Giuseppe Conte, the leader of the 5-Star Movement
(M5S), said Sunday that he was against a "massive" increase in
military spending.
While stressing that the M5S does not want to trigger a
government crisis, Conte the executive must not "present us with
a fait accomplit , it must listen to us".
"The government of national unity was not formed for this
reason, but to tackle an economic and social crisis, and now an
energy one, and implement the National Recovery and Resilience
Plan (NRRP)," he said.
League leader Matteo Salvini has also expressed reservations
about raising miliary spending.
