The G7 and NATO summits showed
extraordinary unity in condemning Russian aggression in Ukraine
Thursday, Premier Mario Draghi said.
He said they were ready to beef up sanctions if necessary.
"We must use sanctions but we still desperately want peace," he
said.
Draghi called on China to "contribute" to the peace process.
He said the plight of Ukrainian refugees posed a "humanitarian
drama", and the UN must intervene.
Draghi reiterated that a no-fly zone over Ukraine was
"impossible" for NATO or the EU and said Italy had also
reiterated a pledge to up military soending to 2% of GDP in line
with NATO requirements.
"We discussed energy and agri-food security and the EU wants to
become independent from Russian gas," he said.
Draghi called for measures against speculative fuel prices.
