The head of the Italian Air Force
said Wednesday that Italy's fighters are currently deployed
close to the war in Ukraine and stressed that utmost care was
needed in operations to avoid actions that could provoke an
escalation.
"I have given authorisation for the number of our Eurofighters
in service with NATO in Romania to be doubled," Air Force Chief
of Staff Luca Goretti told a hearing of parliament's defence
committees.
"We are less than 20 miles from the Ukraine border.
"We must pay attention in our defence activities.
"It takes only the smallest thing to cross the border and find
ourselves in war.
"That's why I'm telling my crews that everything must be done
according to the rules, now more than ever.
"You must never get carried away to see what's there.
"There could be attempts to get us to enter Ukraine territory
and that would be the end".
