Health Minister Roberto Speranza said Monday that he will have his children vaccinated for COVID-19 and stressed that the issue of vaccines is not one to tackle "at the bar, on talk shows and on social media".
Speaking on the fringes of an event at Basilicata University's medicine faculty in Potenza, the minister called on parents to trust their paediatricians.
Italy is set to start vaccinating children aged five to 11 this week.
Speranza stressed the children under 12 will be exempt from the obligation to have the Green Pass health certificate in situations where is is necessary for anyone 12 or older.
He said that 88.19% of the Italian population over 12 have had at least one jab.
The minister added that early data suggests a third booster COVID vaccine dose gives a good degree of protection against variants such as Omicron.
