Health Undersecretary Andrea Costa said Monday that the COVID-19 situation in Italy was under control, among reports that the government could impose restrictions over the Christmas holidays with contagion on the rise.
"We must not convey messages of alarm or excessive concern," Costa told Radio 24.
"Most Italian people are vaccinated (for COVID-19), the situations in the hospitals is under control.
"We should look to the coming weeks with confidence while being aware that we certainly have not emerged from the pandemic and we need great institutional and political unity".
Costa also played down talk of the the criteria for the Green Pass COVID-19 health certificate, which is necessary to access Italian places of work, among other things, changing.
The Green Pass shows that a person is vaccinated for the coronavirus, has recovered from it in the last six months or tested positive in the last few days.
He added, however, that being vaccinated for COVID-19 could become obligatory for some more groups of people.
At the moment the COVID jab is only obligatory for health workers in Italy.
