Police on Friday said there had been a murder-suicide at Montesilvano near Pescara in Abruzzo but they were not sure who had acted first, the husband or wife, both Romanians.
They were both in their 50s and had been in Italy for around 15 years, police said.
The bodies were found in the kitchen, one on top of the other.
They bore stab wounds.
The couple's 10-year-old son was in school when the incident happened.
Carabinieri are investigating.
An autopsy has been ordered.
