The mayor of the town
of San Ferdinando in Calabria on Thursday ordered the sprawling
migrant farm worker tent camp there to be cleared after fires
killed three migrants there over the past year.
First citizen Andrea Tripodi said he ordered the "immediate
clearance" of the camp, which houses migrants working in the
fields of the nearby Piana di Gioia Tauro.
Over the last year there have been fires in the camp that
have caused the deaths of three migrants.
The ordinance, translated into French, English and Arabic,
has been delivered to all residents of the camp.
The interior ministry said all of the regular migrants among
the around 1,000 immigrants would be found a place in rceeption
centres (ex-SPRARs, CARAs, CAS).
Two years ago some 2,700 migrants were registered in the
camp.
