The recent World Youth Day celebrations in Panama were a "counter-current sign with respect to today's sad tendency to conflictual nationalisms, that raise walls, and close themselves to universality, to the meeting between peoples," Pope Francis said Wednesday.
The pope said he had been heartened by "seeing all those flags fluttering together, dancing in the hands of young people who were filled with joy at meeting each other".
This, he said, had been a "prophetic sign...a sign that young Christians are the yeast of peace in the world".
Francis was speaking at his weekly general audience about his recent trip to WYD in Panama City.
