Pope Francis on Wednesday made an appeal for the rights of all children to be protected in his weekly general audience in St Peter's Square attended by around 22,000 people. "I appeal to the conscience of everyone, institutions and families, for children to always be protected and their wellbeing safeguarded and for them never to endure forms of slavery, recruitment in armed groups or mistreatment," he said. Sunday is Universal Children's Day.
