Italian President Sergio Mattarella on Monday said the role of the judiciary's self-governing body, the Supreme Council of Magistrates (CSM), is difficult yet key for democracy.
The CSM has a "difficult and often little-understood role... a fundamental function for the constitutional democracy", said Mattarella, who as president is the CSM's chief.
The judiciary's self-governing body held a meeting on Monday to approve new regulations.
The objective of the CSM is to "safeguard, at its best, the autonomy and independence" of magistrates, Mattarella also said.
