The rightwing anti-immigrant
Northern League on Tuesday rejected the idea of a new
center-right alliance with Interior Minister Angelino Alfano's
New Center Right (NCD) party and Denis Verdini, a former close
aide of Silvio Berlusconi who recently split from the
ex-premier's Forza Italia (FI) party.
The NCD is a junior member of the ruling left-right
coalition led by Premier Matteo Renzi's center-left Democratic
Party (PD). Its leader Alfano is a former protege of Silvio
Berlusconi.
Although formally in the opposition, ALA has lent crucial
backing to the center-left government on several votes on its
reforms.
"If anyone is thinking of involving Alfano....Verdini and
assorted traitors they thought wrong," League chief Matteo
Salvini wrote on Facebook.
"The League will never stand for it: we look forward not
back".
The League was a member of the conservative coalition that
backed several Berlusconi governments.
