There is polluted seawater every
54km along the Italian coast, environmental watchdog Legambiente
said Friday.
Untreated sewage is to blame, it said.
The findings are the result of an annual survey carried out
by Legambiente's boat Goletta Verde between June and August
along the coastline.
Of 265 points surveyed on the basis of reports from local
chapters of Legambiente or private citizens, 137 were found to
be polluted or highly polluted, with levels over double the
legal amount.
The situation was most acute in Marche, Abruzzo and
Calabria, as well as in Sicily and Campania.
Sardinia, Puglia and Veneto, instead, had little pollution.
The survey also showed that in 74% of cases no swimming
signs are missing in forbidden waters.
