Italy natl health prescriptions set to go digital

'Can't rule out inconveniences' says doctors union chief

(ANSA) - Rome, February 29 - Italian national health service users will no longer see their family doctors filling out traditional red prescription slips, because that part of the service is going digital beginning on Tuesday, March 1.
Starting tomorrow, family doctors will prescribe medication, tests and visits to specialists by accessing an online network, which is also visible to pharmacists, labs and clinics.
However, doctors will still be handing out written versions, in case of a failed Internet connection or system malfunctions at the pharmacy. "We're ready, but we can't rule out the possibility of some inconveniences," said FIMMG family doctors union chief Giacomo Milillo.
The law that eliminated written prescriptions went into effect in December 2015.
