Authorities ordered Friday an
autopsy be carried out on a three-year-old Romanian girl who was
pronounced dead on arrival at a southern hospital Thursday
night, police said.
The girl, Lidia, was brought to the Sarno hospital in
Salerno province by her father with whom she had been living in
unhygienic, impoverished conditions after her mother returned to
Romania, police said.
Doctors said cause of death could have been a respiratory
crisis but a prosecutor ordered an autopsy after the girl's
father suggested that neighbours with whom he had left his
daughter may in some way have been responsible for her death.
No signs of violence were found on the little girl's body
