The European Parliament on
Wednesday approved a resolution calling for national quotas on
receiving migrants as well as more resources for the Frontex
border agency. With the vast majority of migrants landing on
Italy's southernmost shores, the country has been shouldering
the burden of their care. The motion was passed with a strong
majority of 449 votes in favour, 130 votes against and 93
abstentions. The vote comes amid new waves of migrant arrivals -
and numerous deaths - by sea in dangerous conditions.
