Six public officials
have been reported to the state audit court for alleged loss to
the public purse of approximately 40 million euros in relation
to the creation of a specialist heart centre that has never
opened, finance police said Thursday.
The specialist centre for cardiac disorders in the
Bianchi-Melacrino-Morelli hospital in the southern city of
Reggio Calabria was completed in December 2011 at a cost of over
18 million euros.
To this must be added over seven million euros per year of
lost savings to the regional health authorities, finance police
said.
Lack of resources to hire specialist medical personnel to
staff the centre is allegedly one of the reasons for its failure
to open.
