The recession ravaging the
Italian economy led to a loss last year of 3.7% of its
companies, led by a drop of more than 7% in construction firms,
national statistical agency Istat said Tuesday.
That also meant job losses for employees, with the total
number of workers falling by 2.3% in 2013, the agency said.
A series of recessions and economic crisis have plagued the
country since 2008, leading to a national jobless rate reported
last Friday at 13.2% and an unemployment rate among youth at
more than 43.3%.
In all there were an estimated 1.6 million companies with
employees in Italy last year, Istat said.
Those firms involved 13.3 million people, 11.4 million of
those employees.
