Federica Pellegrini
failed to make it onto the podium in the final of the women's
200m freestyle at the Rio Olympics on Tuesday, coming fourth in
a race won by Katie Ledecky of the United States.
Pellegrini, whose packed trophy cabinet includes the 2008
Olympic title in the same event, narrowly missed bronze with a
time of 1'55''18.
"I feel like I'm in a small nightmare," Pellegrini said
shortly after the race.
"In the last 50m I 'died': I had nothing left to give."
In a medal-less fourth day for Italy, Fabio Fognini and
Andreas Seppi were also knocked out of the men's tennis doubles
after losing their quarter final match to Canadian pair
Nestor-Posipil 6-3, 6-1.
Fognini is due to play against Andy Murray in the men's
singles quarter final on Wednesday evening.
