Italian Olympic Committee
(CONI) doctors are monitoring the Zika virus currently affecting
Brazil and consider it to be "absolutely under control", CONI
President Giovanni Malagò said Thursday.
"CONI has an institute of medicine that is considered a
centre of excellence," Malago said.
"Our doctors say that the situation is absolutely under
control. They are monitoring it day by day," he added.
There has been concern about the impact of Zika, which is
spread by mosquito and can cause microcephaly in babies, on the
2016 Olympics in Rio.
"Over and above the the credibility of internationally
renowned technical experts, doctors and consultants in the field
of infectious diseases, by the time the Rio Olympics get under
way the climate will have changed," Malagò said.
The World Health Organization declared Zika an emergency
February 1 and the United Nations has said contraception and
abortion services should be boosted in affected countries.
