Italian expertise has made it possible for Vietnam's first successful child-kidney transplant from a live donor.
The operation on was conducted at the National Hospital for Pediatrics in Hanoi with a team of local doctors and surgeons from Rome's Bambino Gesù children's hospital on March 25.
The young child is doing well after the surgery. The operation is part of the Charity Vespa for Children programme sponsored by Italian scooter and motorbike group Piaggio.
The project has made it possible to set up a new department within the National Hospital for Pediatrics that can accomodate 30 patients at a time. Over 1,000 children have had operations thanks to the Italian project since January 2013 and two more are scheduled to have kidney transplants in September. "Carrying out a pediatric transplant from a live donor is an enormous step forward," said Bambino Gesù President Giuseppe Profiti during a visit to Vietnam.
"The project is making it possible to respond to the health needs of the area we are working in".
