League leader Matteo Salvini on
Tuesday sued former Northern League treasurer Francesco Belsito,
indicted for misappropriation with former leader Umberto Bossi
and his son Renzo, 'The Trout', for using party finds for
private ends.
The formal legal action was taken in view of an upcoming
appeals trial with Belsito, Bossi and Bossi Jr in the dock.
Salvini had until the end of this month to lodge his suit.
On Monday the Genoa appeals court upheld the seizure of 49
million euros from the coffers of the Northern League's
successor, the Salvini-led League.
At the first-instance trial a year ago, a Genoa court handed
down a one year, 10 month term for Bossi and a three year nine
month term for Belsito in the party funding fraud case.
On September 18 lawyers representing the League agreed on an
arrangement with prosecutors for the seizure of party funds
related to the convictions for fraud.
Under the arrangement, 100,000 euros will be confiscated
every two months for a total of 600,000 euros a year.
