Italian President Sergio
Mattarella on Monday hailed social cohesion as key to society
during a ceremony at the presidential Quirinale palace in Rome
to award the Cavaliere del Lavoro order of merit.
"Competitiveness and innovation" must progress alongside
the "strengthening of the founding values of our community",
Mattarella said, stressing that social cohesion is a "binding
part of our lifestyle system".
The president also said Europe's ideals needed renewed
strength.
He cited the values of "inclusion, tolerance, opportunity,
fairness, solidarity" that have "made our country great".
Mattarella then spoke in his address about the Industry 4.0
national plan, which he said could "accentuate forms of dualism
in our society".
He said the program to stimulate companies to invest in
research and innovation, is a "complex challenge" that could cut
down employment as some jobs could be accomplished by robots.
"The net balance between the jobs that are created and lost
is not an indifferent variable", he noted, urging for a
"collective effort to successfully confront the multiple
challenges ahead" and to "increase the number of successful
operators so they become a majority and not a restricted
circle".
The president also noted that the current international
scenario with "strong conflicts and instability" requires a
"forward-looking and clear vision," not a logic of protectionism
in which companies "would age quickly" without competition.
