Premier Matteo Renzi said
Italy, a net contributor to the European Union budget, is not
money box for other member States who then fail to meet their
commitments in other areas, such as helping with the migrant
crisis.
"We cannot be the piggy bank of countries who call for
solidarity only when it is time to take and not to give," Renzi
said during a visit to Asti.
Renzi has threatened to wield an EU budget veto unless
countries like Hungary take in their fair share of asylum
seekers.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has refused to
accept the migrants allocated to Budapest as part of an EU
relocation system to ease the pressure on counties at the brunt
of the crisis, such as Italy and Greece.
