Anti-establishment 5-Star
Movement (M5S) chief Beppe Grillo on Tuesday slammed Premier
Matteo Renzi for saying he would revive a project to build a
bridge linking the Italian mainland to the city of Messina in
Sicily.
"The Moral Cripple - as Grillo calls the Italian premier -
said he's willing to loosen the purse strings (of citizens'
public funds) to restart the Bridge over the Strait, a useless,
incredibly expensive project in a highly seismic area," the
comedian-turned-politician wrote on his blog.
"The M5S managed to put a stop to the irresponsible 2024
Olympics in Rome thanks to (M5S Rome Mayor) Virginia Raggi, but
we still haven't been able to halt the unhealthy appetites of
those who would field useless large-scale public works with
citizens' money at all costs".
The bridge would cost 8.5 billion euros, which would be
better put to use to "save 10 million Italians from hunger,"
Grillo wrote.
