Government reforms will ensure
29 chronically absentee public employees who were caught in the
act in the Sicilian city of Siracusa will be speedily sacked,
Civil Service Reform Minister Marianna Madia said Wednesday.
"Absenteeism, 29 employees caught in the act... civil
service reform law to be applied: speedy sacking in defence of
honest civil servants," tweeted Madia, whose reform went into
effect July 13.
The minister's remarks came after it emerged that Siracusa
finance police surveillance revealed 29 suspects in an ongoing
investigation habitually went shopping after clocking in at
their public-sector jobs.
The suspects also spent their working hours moonlighting on
other jobs, going for medical check-ups, or simply going home,
investigators said.
The probe began in January 2015, and the suspects were
followed and recorded while committing clocking-in fraud.
