Premier Matteo Renzi said Tuesday that "he had never seen so many lies" as those from the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S) over a probe into an environment councillor but "as an Italian and premier I am sorry" for the "unseemly" row that has engulfed M5S Mayor Virgina Raggi. "I'm not celebrating", he said. "I know that according to political logic you see others failing and you should say, Yay, Hurray. But I won't. If Virginia Raggi cuts a fine figure, Rome cuts a fine figure. The recent scenes have been frankly unseemly for all."
