Premier Matteo Renzi on Monday
called for speedy, transparent post-quake reconstruction after a
6.2-magnitude tremor flatted villages and displaced thousands in
central Italy last week.
"(The reconstruction effort) must be coordinated in the
wisest, fastest possible way," the premier wrote on his online
newsletter.
"We must hurry...but we must also do the job right, with
the involvement of the affected populations. The reconstruction
must take place in the most transparent possible way, with the
help of... the National Anti-Corruption Authority (ANAC) and
maximum online transparency. Every cent of aid will be accounted
for, beginning with those donated by Italians to the civil
protection (quake relief fund)".
Renzi added "we must keep the (affected) communities alive
in their (original) locations. Places have a soul, they are not
simply picture-postcard villages".
The premier named three phases of post-quake response -
emergency, reconstruction, prevention.
"These are three different phases, three different
construction sites, three different responsibilities," Renzi
wrote.
The effort must be collective, because the heritage that
must be preserved in spite of the destruction belongs to
everyone and to future generations, Renzi wrote.
"We must live up to this responsibility," he said.
