The arrest of five people suspected
of belonging to a secret cupola of the Calabria-based
'Ndrangheta mafia that interacted systematically with police and
institutions represented "a further development" in
understanding of the relationship between the powerful crime
syndicate and freemasonry in the privince of Reggio Calabria,
local prosecutor Federico Cafiero de Raho said Friday.
"It takes it to a new level," de Raho added.
Arrest warrants were issued against centre-right Forza
Italia Senator Antonio Caridi, former MP Paolo Romeo, who is
already in prison custody, former centre-right regional
councillor Alberto Sarra, lawyer Giorgio De Stefano and
Francesco Chirico.
Caridi's arrest must now be authorized by the Senate.
