The European Union needs to
take a 'historical' perspective on the 'epochal' phenomenon of
migration, Italian President Sergio Mattarella said Tuesday.
"Italy is doing everything necessary (to manage the flows),
but the EU needs to take responsibility for overall management
not just at emergency level but systematically, in a historical
perspective," Mattarella said after a meeting with his Romanian
counterpart Klaus Johannis in Bucharest.
Migration is "an epochal long-term phenomenon" that
concerns not just the countries of arrival, requiring "joint
solutions from the EU", he added.
"If the phenomenon is not governed the number of people
arriving will increase progressively and orderly management will
be difficult," Mattarella said.
