Anti-establishment 5-Star Movement
(M5S) Rome mayoral candidate Virginia Raggi said Monday she has
"no prejudice" against the nation's capital bidding to host the
2024 Olympics, but "ordinary" issues must take precedence over
extraordinary ones.
"We reiterated our line," Raggi said after a two-hour
meeting with Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) chief Giovanni
Malago'.
"There is no prejudice against the Games, but we must
think first of the ordinary and then we will assess the
extraordinary".
Roman lawyer Raggi, 38, said in February she opposed Rome
hosting the next Olympics because it has a lot of other problems
that need to be solved first.
"We need to concentrate on the ordinary," Raggi said at the
time. "In any case, we'll inform citizens of the costs and the
risks of the Olympics," she added.
Rome 2024 Olympic bid panel head Luca Cordero di
Montezemolo was also present at part of today's meeting, but put
off questions from reporters.
Former Ferrari and Fiat chief Montezemolo, now president of
Alitalia, was named chair of the bidding committee a year ago.
Rome hosted the 1960 Olympics and carried off a largely
successful edition of the World Swimming Championships in 2009.
Raggi is running for mayor in local elections to be held
June 5.
