Interior Minister Angelino Alfano
on Monday hailed a police officer who saved a young man's life
by jumping off a ferry halfway between Calabria and Sicily.
Assistant State Police Chief Basilio Fallo, 41, on Sunday
jumped off a Caronte & Tourist ferry after the young man's
mother screamed for help, saying her son had tried to kill
himself.
"Hug my family and my kids if I don't make it," Fallo told
a friend before diving in.
He managed to reach the young man in time, and kept him
afloat until they were rescued.
"This was an act of great bravery and selflessness...
demonstrating once again the great human and professional
qualities of our police force," Alfano wrote on Facebook.
