Italian magistrates union ANM said
Friday that comments criticising the government attributed to
Piergiorgio Morosini, a member of the Italian judiciary's
self-governing body CSM, were "inappropriate and unjustified" if
he really said them.
The ANM added that the statements attributed to Morosini
put at risk "correct relations between the powers of the State".
Morosini was quoted by Il Foglio newspaper as saying that
Premier Matteo Renzi "must be stopped" in an alleged campaign
against the judiciary.
Morosini denied ever saying this, adding that
"incomplete phrases were attributed to me" and an informal,
off-the-record conversation had been "twisted".
Premier Matteo Renzi earlier this week rubbished talk
that elements in the judiciary could be trying to undermine his
government after a series of criminal cases hit the image of his
centre-left Democratic Party (PD).
