There is no ongoing asylum seeker
from Libya emergency, Premier Matteo Renzo told a joint press
conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Rome on
Thursday. "The numbers on migrant arrivals from Libya are not
very different from last year," he said. "As of yesterday there
were some 26,000 refugees, 1,000 up from 2015. If we consider
that in 2015 we received fewer migrants and refugees than in
2014, you understand there is no emergency". Renzi pointed out
that Germany did have an emergency as it took in "over one
million people" last year.
