Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni said on Thursday that Italy aimed to strengthen its economic ties with China, boost trade and encourage Chinese investments in Italy.
He was speaking during a joint news conference with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, who is in Rome for the 7th Italy-China governmental committee.
"We will work towards reinforcing our economic relations and our capacities to export towards the big Chinese market, and to increase Chinese direct investments in Italy to raise employment levels in our country," Gentiloni said during the news conference at Rome's Villa Madama. Gentiloni also highlighted the importance of political relations between Rome and Beijing.
"During our meetings we gave a lot of space to the crisis underway in the Mediterranean," he said.
On his part, Wang welcomed Italy's participation in the new Silk Road, a network of land and maritime trade routes.
"We have to work together to bring our people closer," Wang said.
