Premier Matteo Renzi said Wednesday
he will see the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S) in
court. "The M5S will have a prompt reply as to the Democratic
Party (PD) allegedly being financed by oil lobbies, because the
PD has brought civil and penal suits against the deputy House
speaker (Luigi Di Maio) and other members of his party," Renzi
said. "We will defend the PD's good name in court, should you -
as I hope you will - give up your parliamentary immunity. We
have nothing to hide". Renzi's remarks came after the M5S asked
him about the financing of his party and of his Open Foundation,
a non-profit political think tank set up in 2013. Reform
Minister Maria Elena Boschi sits on its board, according to the
Foundation's website. M5S MP Alessandro Di Battista said earlier
Renzi has become "a jester in trouble". "Renzi should admit his
PD took money from (Rome mafia kingpin Salvatore) Buzzi, that it
does favors for bankers and oil companies - but he won't answer
a straight question," Di Battista said. "I actually felt a
little sorry for him".
