Italy will respect all
decisions taken by an international tribunal at the Permanent
Court of Arbitration in The Hague concerning the case of two
Italian marines accused by India of killing two Indian fishermen
during an anti-piracy mission in 2012, Italy's representative
said Thursday.
"If Italy, a sovereign State, says it will respect the
order of a tribunal that it itself had set up to resolve the
dispute, there can be no doubt (about it)," ambassador Francesco
Azzarello said.
The court is examining a petition by Italy for Salvatore
Girone to be allowed to return home from India during the
arbitration.
A ruling is expected in a month.
"Italy is committed to fully respecting the contents and
dispositions of the court order concerning Girone's hoped-for
return to Italy, whatever they might be," Azzarello added.
India has argued against the marine's repatriation on
grounds he might not return to India for trial should the court
recognise Indian jurisdiction in the case.
Fellow serviceman Massimiliano Latorre is back in Italy
after suffering a stroke in 2014.
Italy has taken the marines case to international
arbitration amid an unresolved dispute over jurisdiction and
claims of negligence and delays in its handling by India.
