European civilisation "always calls
us to defend the value of life and co-existence, today also
against terrorism," President Sergio Mattarella said Wednesday
at a ceremony marking mentally disabled awareness day.
"Democratic Italy and the European Union were born to break
down walls, to eliminate barbed wire, to build a world of free
people, equal in their diversity, and that is an ever-alive goal
we must aim for," he said.
Matterall said the disabled "must not become invisible
people" and the issue of their care "should not be offloaded
onto families".
