Pope Francis has
introduced new norms regulating financial transparency in causes
for beatification and canonisation in the Catholic Church, it
emerged on Thursday.
The changes are set out in a rescript that came into force
on March 4 for three years on an experimental basis.
The decision also establishes a solidarity fund within the
the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in support of actors
with fewer financial resources.
Under the new norms on transparency the cost of the Roman
phase of causes will be carried by the Holy See with a
contribution from actors.
In addition, the finances will be overseen by an
administrator who will in turn be subject to oversight.
The new measures are part of the pope's attempt to clean up
the Vatican's finances amid claims of lack of transparency and
lavish spending by prelates.
